James W. Youngren

Jim spent 25 years in the real-estate development business, specializing in urban redevelopment projects in the Northwest. In 1979, along with Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company, he co-founded the Cornerstone Development Company. He initiated the development of the Glenwood Springs Salmon Hatchery on his Orcas Island property in 1978, which led to the formation of LLTK in 1985. A co-founder of the Children's Trust Foundation, Jim also serves on the board of trustees of the Bullitt Foundation.

Tom currently serves as a director for several Madrona portfolio companies: Impinj, Singlepoint, Mercent and ShopIgniter. In addition, he serves on the board of Amazon.com.  He currently serves as chair of the Seattle Foundation Investment Committee.  He is also a board member of TechNet and a board member and former chair of the Technology Alliance .

Immediately prior to co-founding Madrona Investment Group in 1995, Tom served as president of LIN Broadcasting Corporation and Executive Vice President of McCaw Cellular Communications, Inc.  Previously, he was chair of the Executive Committee and Partner in the Northwest's largest law firm, Perkins Coie, where he was principal counsel for The Boeing Company, Alaska Airlines and a number of early technology companies.  Before that, he was an attorney with Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York.  He is past chair of the Washington State Technology Alliance and the Discovery Institute, past chair of the Pacific Science Center and past president of Intiman Theater in Seattle.  He was co-chair of the capital campaign for the Computer Science and Engineering Department's new building at the University of Washington. 

Tom attended Harvard College, where he graduated cum laude. He then received his law degree from Columbia Law School where he was an editor of the Columbia Law Review.

Having spent 16 years as a senior manager at Boeing, Doug is currently a director of Puget Sound Energy and of Washington Mutual, Inc., where he serves as chairman of the audit committee. He chairs the board of directors of Seattle public-television station KCTS and also serves on the boards of trustees for the Pacific Science Center and ArtsFund.

As head of Mercer's Northwest Operating Unit, Doug was responsible for the firm's client activities throughout the region, and also served as president of the Seattle Chapter of the Western Pension and Benefits Conference. A graduate of the University of Washington, Doug currently serves on the boards of Camp Orkila, Global Partnerships, and the Greater Seattle YMCA.

Director, Prostate Cancer Treatment Center

Among the world's leading prostate-cancer specialists, Peter was a pioneer in prostate seed implantation for the treatment of the disease. He has organized numerous education programs and has trained more than 6,000 physicians in seed implantation. He is also lead editor of The Prostate Cancer Treatment Book, recently published by McGraw-Hill. In addition, over the past ten years Peter has released more than three million wild salmon fry from his property on Hood Canal.

Jerry Grinstein was the CEO of Delta Air Lines from 2004 to 2007. He had been a director of Delta Air Lines since 1987 and served as Delta’s non-executive chairman from August 1997 until October 1999. Prior to taking on the CEO role of Delta, Jerry served as non-executive chairman of Agilent Technologies from 1999 through November 2002. He retired as chairman and CEO of Burlington Northern Inc. in 1995. While in that position he oversaw the company’s acquisition of Santa Fe Pacific Corp., which created the nation’s largest railroad. Before joining BNI, Jerry served as president and CEO of Western Airlines, Inc., from 1984 through March 1987, when Western merged with Delta.

Jerry was a partner in the law firm Preston, Thorgrimson, Ellis & Holman in Seattle from 1969-1983. His prior career includes serving as Chief Counsel to the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, Counsel to the Merchant Marine & Transportation subcommittee and Administrative Assistant to U.S. Senator Warren G. Magnuson.

Jerry is currently a Strategic Director at Madrona Venture Group. He is a Trustee of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation and a board member of Long Live the Kings, The University of Washington Foundation, the William D. Ruckelshaus Center and the Foundation Bank. A Native of Seattle, Jerry graduated from Yale College in 1954 and Harvard Law School in 1957. He and his wife Lyn reside in Seattle.

He is also active in the government and public-affairs programs of the American Forest and Paper Association and the Washington Forest Protection Association.

He co-founded Gear.com, an online retailer of surplus sporting goods acquired by Overstock. His board positions have included The Nature Conservancy of Washington, On the Boards, The Henry Art Gallery, and Northwest Horticulture. He currently serves on the Executive and Screening Committees for the Alliance of Angels, and on the Investment Committee for its Seed Fund.

When Steve retired from Weyerhaeuser Company in 2001, he was President of Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company, a single family homebuilder and land developer.  He represented the business community on the Shared Strategy Development Committee which produced a recovery plan for Puget Sound salmon.  In retirement, Steve has been involved in several  non-profits promoting low income housing and coldwater fisheries.

A graduate of Michigan Law School, Doug specializes in the legal and business issues relating to the environment, energy, hazardous waste, and utilities. His clients have included the Boeing Company, Puget Sound Energy, Birmingham Steel, and the Port of Pasco, among many others. In considerable demand as a speaker on environmental law, Doug also is chairman of the Seattle City Light Citizens' Rate Advisory Committee and is active in Leadership Tomorrow and the Seattle Chamber of Commerce Energy Committee.

For more than 20 years Denny has operated Denny Miller Associates, a government relations and consulting firm located across the street from the U.S. Capitol. Before that he was a senior assistant to the late Senator Henry M. Jackson (D-WA) for 16 years, the last 6 as chief of staff. Denny, who holds degrees in natural resources management, water pollution biology, and public administration, was also the founder of Scientific Marking Materials Company of Seattle and is a former U.S. Army officer (artillery).

Lars E. Mobrand, Ph.D.

Involved in salmon management and research in the Pacific NW for more than 40 years, Lars holds degrees from the University of Washington in chemistry and biomathematics. His specialty is population dynamics and computer modeling. During the seventies he served as a scientific advisor to the Treaty tribes. In 1980 he became chief for salmon harvest management and later research chief for the Washington Department of Fisheries. In 1983 he was appointed chair of the Fisheries Advisory Board under US v Washington. In 1982 he founded the MBI consulting group, which later merged with of Jones and Stokes Associates, where he served as a principal for five years. Lars has chaired the Hatchery Scientific Review Group since 2000 and is currently an independent consultant.

Founding Director of Commerce Bank, Northwestern Trust and Investors Advisory Company, Swiftsure Capital (private equity firm), Domaine Meriwether, and Red Hook Ale. Vice Chairman of the Museum Development Authority, Seattle, Trustee of Seattle Art Museum. Former President: Financial Executives Institute - Seattle Chapter; City Club, ACT Theater, as well as leader of ACT's new building project (1997). Graduate and Trustee of Colorado College.

A graduate of the College of Fisheries at the University of Washington, Tom is founder and owner/operator of Angling Unlimited, a sportfishing lodge and charter business in Sitka, Alaska. He also writes for a variety of publications on sportfishing, fish biology, and resource issues. Tom is the former president of the Sitka Charter Boat Operators Association, and serves on the boards of the Alaska Sportfish Council, Bastyr University, and the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust.

Gary has been affiliated with Simpson Timber Company and Simpson Investment Company since 1962, serving as its chairman from 1971 to 1996 and as a director through 2002. He is presently a director of Simpson Resource Company, Microsoft Corporation, PACCAR Inc., The Seattle Times, and Washington Mutual, Inc. He was chairman of the board of Safeco Corporation during 2001 and 2002 and presently serves as lead director there; he is also a member of the advisory board of the University of Washington Business School.

William D. Ruckelshaus

William D. Ruckelshaus is currently a Strategic Director in the Madrona Venture Group, formed in 1999 and a principal in Madrona Investment Group, L.L.C. (MIG), a Seattle based investment company, formed in 1996. He was Chairman/CEO of Browning-Ferris Industries from 1988 to 1995 and Chairman from 1995 to 1999. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 24, 1932, Mr. Ruckelshaus graduated cum laude from Princeton University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and obtained his law degree from Harvard University in 1960. He began a career in law with the Indianapolis firm of Ruckelshaus, Bobbitt and O’Connor in 1960 and was associated with the firm for eight years. In addition, he was Deputy Attorney General of Indiana from 1960 through 1965. He was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives and its majority leader from 1967 to 1969. The President appointed him for the years 1969 and 1970 as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Mr. Ruckelshaus became the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s first Administrator when the agency was formed in December 1970, where he served until April 1973. In April 1973 he was appointed acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and in the same year was appointed Deputy Attorney General of the United States Department of Justice.

From 1974 through 1976, Mr. Ruckelshaus was a senior partner in the Washington, DC law firm of Ruckelshaus Beveridge & Fairbanks. He joined Weyerhaeuser Company in Tacoma, Washington as Senior Vice President for Law and Corporate Affairs from 1976 to 1983 and was responsible for policy setting and coordination of the company’s key external relationships and its legal service functions. In 1983, Mr. Ruckelshaus was appointed by President Reagan as the fifth EPA Administrator until 1985. He served until joining Perkins Coie in 1985, a Seattle based law firm.

He was formerly on the boards of Isilon Systems, Weyerhaeuser Company, Nordstrom, Inc., Cummins Engine Company, Monsanto Company, Solutia, Inc., Pfizer, Inc., Coinstar, Inc., Pharmacia Corporation and Church & Dwight. Currently, he serves on the board of TVW, Long Live the Kings, Meridian Institute and The Energy Foundation. He is the founding Director and Board member of the Initiative for Global Development and Chairs the William D. Ruckelshaus Center. He is a Board Emeritas member of World Resources Institute and the University of Wyoming, Ruckelshaus Center. From July 1997 to July 1998, President Clinton appointed him as the U.S. envoy in the implementing of the Pacific Salmon Treaty and in 1999 he was appointed by Governor Gary Locke as the Chairman of the Salmon Recovery Funding Board for the State of Washington and in May, 2007 appointed by Governor Christine Gregoire as Chairman of the Leadership Council of the Puget Sound Partnership. On June, 2001, he was appointed by President Bush as a member of the Commission on Ocean Policy which was created by Congress in 2000.

Mr. Ruckelshaus and his wife, Jill, reside in Seattle, Washington. They have five children and 12 grandchildren.

With a specialty in the genetics of Pacific salmon, Lisa is a Research Professor at the School Aquatic and Fishery Sciences where she conducts studies and trains students in the emerging field of conservation genomics. Prior to joining the University in 2007, she directed the genetics program at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Anchorage conducting research on the conservation and management of fish species important to commercial and sport fisheries. She has served on scientific panels for the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission and Pacific Salmon Commission and as editor for several scientific publications. Lisa was one of the independent scientists for the Hatchery Scientific Review Group for Puget Sound and the Washington Coast. During her career, she has authored over 70 scholarly articles published in scientific journals.

Gary Smith

Gary is a public affairs consultant with a particular interest in natural resource issues.  He was instrumental in launching the Hatchery Reform project for Puget Sound and Coastal Washington, and helped advise the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife 21st Century Salmon and Steelhead Project.  In 2007, Gary was appointed to serve as one of three representatives of the United States on the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission. He also serves on the board of the Seattle Aquarium.  Gary has chaired numerous statewide political campaigns and has extensive experience in the private sector as well as in local, state, and federal government.  When he’s working, he’d usually rather be fishing, hiking, or climbing.

Tim Thompson

Tim Thompson founded the firm in January 2001 after spending approximately nine years at the law firm of Gordon, Thomas, Honeywell, where he established a successful consulting practice.  He currently is the President of Thompson Smitch Consulting Group.  Prior to working at Gordon, Thomas, Honeywell, Tim served as the Legislative Assistant, District Director and eventually Congressman Norm Dicks top aide.  He worked for Congressman Dicks in Washington D.C. and the State of Washington for close to 10 years.

Over the past twenty years, Tim has established himself as one of the Northwest's top negotiator/facilitators and strategists on important public/private natural resources and economic issues.  He has successfully negotiated some of the Pacific Northwest's most complex environmental and economic agreements, including the Centralia Power Plant Cleanup, the Washington State Forest and Fish Agreement and the Murray Pacific, Port Blakely, Tacoma Water and Mid Columbia Habitat Conservation Plans.  He was also instrumental in establishing the Tri County (King, Pierce and Snohomish County) salmon restoration initiative which led to the establishment of the Federal $100 million West Coast Salmon Initiative.

Tim has built a boutique private and public federal government affairs practice with international, national and local businesses on issues affecting business and government.  He has assisted countless public and private entities develop successful legislative strategies in securing federal funding approval and support for their initiatives over the past 20 years in the private sector.  Tim's knowledge of both the public and private sector gives him a unique insight on how to navigate clients through the complexities of the business and government environments. 

Tim is a graduate of Gonzaga University, where he received a Bachelors Degree in Business.  He is active in a number of organizations and is heavily involved with local charities.

A lead staffer for Billy Frank, Jr., chairman of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, David has extensive experience in all aspects of salmon, shellfish, and wildlife management and land use issues, including the Pacific Salmon Treaty, the Pacific Fisheries Management Council, the Growth Management Act, and the Endangered Species Act. He also serves as a member of the Executive Committee for the tri-county response to the Puget Sound fall chinook salmon listing under the ESA.
