LLTK Presents First Annual Lifetime Achievement Award in Salmon Conservation to Congressman Norm Dicks

In November, Long Live the Kings presented the first annual Lifetime Achievement Award in Salmon Conservation to Congressman Norm Dicks (D-WA), in recognition of his lifetime commitment to the recovery of wild Pacific Northwest salmon and steelhead. The LLTK Lifetime Achievement Award was designed to acknowledge individuals who have worked, over an extended period of time, resulting in significant and measurable impacts, to recover Pacific Northwest salmon and steelhead.

Long Live the Kings thinks long-term about salmon and steelhead recovery; when you invest in our work, you invest in the future of the fish. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to LLTK today.

PROJECT UPDATE: USFWS Hatchery Review

USFWS Completes Comprehensive 5-Year Hatchery Review

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has concluded a five-year (2005-2010), science-based review of its 24 salmon hatcheries in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. LLTK provided facilitation, project coordination, and communications support for the review, which examined 53 hatchery programs for Pacific salmon and steelhead. "The USFWS review process was modeled after the Puget Sound and Coastal Washington Hatchery Reform Project," said Michael Schmidt, LLTK Director of Fish Programs and lead facilitator for the project. "It was operated in a transparent fashion with opportunities for input from federal, state, and tribal co-managers as well as the general public."

Glenwood Springs Chinook Program Thriving
After six years of unfavorable returns, Glenwood Springs Hatchery saw more than 700 Chinook come home to spawn in 2010. "Although favorable marine conditions likely contributed to increased survival, we are confident that this increase in Chinook returns is due to dramatic, positive changes, made to the program in the last 4 years," said Mike O’Connell, Glenwood Springs Hatchery Manager. "It’s affirming to see our work paying off."
