ALL-H ANALYZER (AHA)

The "All H Analyzer" (AHA) is a Microsoft Excel-based tool intended to facilitate the discussion of management options for restoring salmon and steelhead populations in the Pacific Northwest. Developed in 2004 by the Hatchery Scientific Review Group (HSRG), the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), and the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission (NWIFC), AHA is capable of illustrating the combined effects of specific hatchery, habitat, harvest, and hydroelectric management decisions on salmonid populations. AHA should not be viewed as a new model, but rather as an application that enables decision-making by combining information from existing models and on-the-ground observations.

The AHA tool was first used during the summer of 2004 in a series of HSRG-led technical workshops as part of the Puget Sound and Coastal Washington Hatchery Reform Project. The tool was then updated and used in the HSRG's review of the Columbia River Basin (2005-2009) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Pacific Region Hatchery Review. AHA has become broadly accepted within the salmon management community as a tool to aid in the development of integrated harvest, hatchery, and habitat plans.

Development of the AHA tool is ongoing. The most current version is available at http://www.hatcheryreform.us/mfs/tools/welcome_show.action.

The Hatchery Reform Technical Discussion Paper, August 2005, is also available.
