Glenwood Springs Hatchery Engages Community in Salmon Recovery

Glenwood Springs Hatchery Manager Mike O’Connell is helping to provide Orcas Island students and residents firsthand experience with salmon recovery.

In January, Mike delivered more than 300 coho eggs to the YMCA Camp Orkila to be reared at their Marine Salmon Science Center, checked-in on Chinook fry being raised at Orcas Elementary, and led a tour of the Glenwood Springs Hatchery as part of a salmon biology course for Orcas High School Marine Technology students.

This spring, Mike will be assisting staff at Moran State Park Kokanee Hatchery to install a new rearing trough and also to remove a barrier in Moran Creek that has made several hundred feet of good habitat unreachable for spawning Kokanee.
