TOP STORY
Wiskah River

For 20 years, Long Live the Kings (LLTK) has operated the State-owned Wishkah River Salmon Hatchery, located on the rain-soaked southwest corner of Washington's Olympic Peninsula.

Our staff has worked hard to transform the facility into a model of one of LLTK's founding principles: that hatcheries might be used, in concert with habitat restoration, to recover wild salmon and support sustainable fisheries.

With Wishkah's projects firmly established and its operation stable, LLTK determined in 2006 that the time was nearing to return management responsibility to the State of Washington. In June of 2007, we officially handed the facility back to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

Wishkah Facility Manager Terry Baltzell

"LLTK is proud of the tireless and creative work that Hatchery Manager Terry Baltzell has done to transform the Wishkah facility into what the independent Hatchery Scientific Review Group has deemed a 'model' for watershed-scale, conservation hatcheries."

- Barbara Cairns
Executive Director, LLTK

Terry has been managing the Wishkah River Salmon Hatchery as an employee of LLTK since 1986. He began working at the hatchery in 1973, when Mayr Brothers Timber Company established the facility. Before that, Terry worked in forestry and fisheries research for the Washington Department of Natural Resources.

Though LLTK returned management responsibility for the state-owned Wishkah Hatchery to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) in June 2007, Terry remains in his post as Hatchery Manager under the direction of the Chehalis Basin Fisheries Task Force, which has since contracted with WDFW to take on the operation of the facility.
